Review of First Lessons
How will you react if you woke up one day in a different body, in a different world at a different time? First Lessons by Lina J. Potter is book one from the series of medieval tales. The medieval period is an era of men, wars and great kingdoms. In those tough times, a woman of intelligence and courage came forward and broke all the stereotypes of those times.
The book is based on historical fiction with an element of fantasy in it. It is divided into 10 chapters, each is assigned a theme. Lina J. Potter is an excellent writer as she can bring life to any character of her book. She has beautifully drawn a comparison of life in medieval times and now. The author takes us back to medieval times where there is no advancement in medicine and surgery. Doctors have only performed amputations and relied on medicinal plants for drugs. Plants are used for dying and there is no knowledge of bullets and artilleries, oil is still available in crude form and paper is yet to be discovered. Feathers are used instead of pens to write and parchment sheets are used for papers.
Aliya Skorolenok brought up in Russia at a time of war is an intelligent and upcoming great surgeon who loves to assist surgeries and is looking forward to specializing in abdominal surgery. She is in her fifth year of medical school and is going back to her home town to spend some time with her family. While travelling with her family, their car collided with a large truck. Aliya opened her eyes and all she could feel was her pain. The sight to which she opened her eyes is different from what she expected. An old lady is calling her Lillian and she is not able to understand anything. She is caught in a huge body, in a big room all decorated in pink and all malodorous and rancid. In the beginning, she was not able to understand anything but after a few days, she was able to solve the mystery that she was reborn in a new body in a new world and now she is no more Aliya but Lilian the countess of Earton. Will Aliya be able to accept her reality? What discoveries will she make in her new world? will She be able to hide her reality from the world? How will Aliya change Lilian's life?
I loved reading the book. There was no instance where I got bored while reading. Although the book is much more fantasy, it contains a lot more on medical awareness and would have taken a lot of research for the author. I love the way how Aliya accepted her new world and a new body rather than giving up she decided to fight with the circumstances and make a better world for her. I love the episode where Ali Akhmet din Tahirjian broke his limb and how Lilian was able to treat his fracture. She not only closed the wound with mere needle and thread but she gave post-operative care to her patient. The way the countess spoke to her people proves her worth and intelligence.
There is nothing I hate about the book and honestly, I can say I loved each part of the book. I would like to appreciate the author for her writing skills, though the book is not very long and could be finished in a few sittings, due to my busy schedule it took me little time. Each time I started reading from where I left, I was able to recall the whole story.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 ratings. The book is professionally well edited. My ratings are based on the aforementioned reasons.
I would like to recommend this book to fantasy lovers, people who love to read about history, kings and queens, and who are fascinated with castles.
