Review of A Police Action
A police action by A.A. Freda is a historical romance story of two lovers during the Vietnam war. James Coppin is an Italian young man that has been drafted into the army. He makes a lot of bets and lends money with high interest rates, all as parts of his hustle. On a weekend, while out with other soldiers, he meets Samantha Powers, a beautiful young daughter of a preacher. They hit it off and after a night of passion, James finds out the next morning that Samantha is three months pregnant with another man's child and is considering an abortion. Will he allow himself to be dragged into the issues in Samantha's life?
At first, I really thought James was selfish and very greedy. I felt he was ripping people off by charging exorbitant rates for the money he lends. But I read on to discover that it was all part of his coming of age process. His character develops into a strong young man who is smart, resourceful and not scared to say what he thinks. He never fails to take up any opportunity to make more money and his knowledge about the military helps him move up the ladder in his career faster than his mates. He is empathetic and kind, causing people to love and respect him. This is mainly why he never gets punished for his wrong deeds. Even Samantha grows from a scared, pregnant young lady who is broke and confused, to a confident, happy lady with a job and plans for her life. I just grew to love these characters and I found myself feeling all their emotions.
I believe Freda wrote this book from his experience in the military. He vividly paints the loss, fear, hunger and longing suffered by the soldiers fighting to defend their country. There is really nothing to hate about the book, in my opinion. A bit of swearing, but nothing that shouldn't be expected from the characters.
The author has a beautiful way with words. He writes about the very sad war on one hand, while describing the relationship between James and Samantha on the other. I love the fact that he tells the readers as little as possible about the gory details of the war. One would think someone who isn't in the military will find it difficult to understand all the military activities going on in this book, but the author has made it pretty much easy to understand in context. I'll give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
I'd recommend this book to lovers of romance. Also to adults who are curious about the war. There are however, sexual scenes and mentions of abortion and drugs, so you will have to comfortable with those before reading the book.
