Review of A Reconstructed Life
A Reconstructed Life by A.M. Overett is about the aftermath of a war that led to the freedom of Blacks from slavery. This story centers on the life of Lawrence Ambrose, a soldier in the war who had to deal with the pain of defeat and loss, and the truncation of most of the values he was accustomed to.
Determined to move on with his life, Lawrence goes on to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a preacher, following in his father's footsteps. In the course of this pursuit, Lawrence meets and falls head over heels in love with the daughter of the wealthiest and most influential man in the city, and they eventually get married. The pursuit of his dream led to a total revolution of Lawrence’s mind on issues of slavery, racial discrimination, and oppression of Blacks in America. He shows this change of heart by actively participating in the empowerment of Blacks and preaching against racism and discrimination in his church sermons. This move does not augur well with his father-in-law, who is bent on preserving the status quo. This leads to serious clashes between these two. Will Lawrence be able to overcome this challenge? Find out in this book!
This book by A.M. Overett is nothing short of amazing. It is a book that you wouldn’t want to put down once you start reading. The language used is so relatable and easy to understand and helps the reader create a vivid imagination of the happenings in the book. The writer’s respect for women was so conspicuous in the book. This was shown in the relationship between Lawrence and his wife. This is commendable. The book also raises deep questions and issues about the Christian faith, which it also tries to resolve. This could serve as a guide and eye-opener for people of that religion. This book was more than a fictional book for me. It has a lot of things to teach, and I am sure every person who reads this book would share the same view.
It is sad that as amazing as this book is, it is replete with so many errors which can be found on almost every page of the book. This calls for thorough editing. It is on the basis that I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. A Reconstructed Life, if properly edited, would be a masterpiece because it has the potentials of a great book.
This book is highly recommended to every lover of good fictional novels and also to people who have no problem with religious writings.
