[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "An Honorable Place" by Henry Taylor Millard.]
Debbie finds a girl of about three years old in a dumpster; she saves the girl, reports the incident, and the girl, known as Lourdes, is adopted by Maria and Danny Sanchez, possibly the most loving parents she could find. Investigations geared towards discovering Lourdes' parents heed no positive result. We are introduced to the family of William Barrett Downs, starting from Billy to his son, Four, and his grandson Barrett. Four suffers from an addiction that threatens his life.
Lourdes grows up to be a genius whose brilliance amazes almost everyone, and she graduates top of her class; however, she is kept in the dark about the facts surrounding her adoption. As the story progresses, Lourdes, through her intelligence, finds her way into Billy's heart. Is there a relationship between Billy and the young lady? Will Lourdes ever discover the truth about herself?
I found a lot of errors while reading this book, and I guess that'll be the only reason I will be giving this book three out of four stars. I could not find anything else to dislike about this book; I believe that another round of editing would do the book good as the errors I found in the book were mostly typographical.
This book contained a lot of positive aspects. Firstly, it was a suspense and mystery-filled book. When I started reading this book, I could never have anticipated its end, and I witnessed a lot of shocking revelations. The events in this book would amaze any reader. The author maintained the use of a detailed yet straightforward writing style throughout the book, and I found it very easy to understand the book due to the choice of words. This boosted my appreciation of the book as it was written in a coherent manner.
The book covers a lot of themes such as love, wealth, struggle, survival, and betrayal. I like that the book ran over the years, as we witnessed the growth of several huge companies we now have today. The book contained a lot of educative material, bordering mainly on economics and stocks. I found a particular quote from Adam Smith very intriguing and applicable to our lives as humans. In An Honorable Place, Henry Taylor Millard skillfully tells the story of two families while keeping a reader in suspense. The book also contained a lot of comical scenes and conversations, especially during Lourdes' conversations with people.
I recommend this book to teenagers on their path to self-discovery. Although adults can also read this book, I feel young adults or teenagers would better appreciate it because it focuses on the growth of a young girl.
