Some fathers prefer daughters to sons, while some even imagine how their entire lives would shape while having a daughter. It is probably true that a father would expect more emotional sharing with a daughter, rather than a son. In Hemingway's daughter, Christine Whitehead described the life expected by a father with his daughter that he imagined.
A father wants to give everything to her daughter, but life reserves all sorts of surprises and adventures that shape life otherwise. Nevertheless, the innate effort remains, and is translated to the offspring somehow, especially to the daughters, who are able to bloom as desired.
Like an ordinary man, Hemingway comes with the characteristics of most aged man who passion for his work, but have worn out with time. Despite of his bad habits like alcoholism and misbehaviors, he was loved by his daughter Finley. The passion derived from her father gives Finley enough zest to pave a new path as a lawyer that she has always dreamt of, that also in a well-guarded male dominated avenue. She certainly seems to be heartbroken with the failures of her father in his marriages and taking this as a lesson of life, she tries to build a better future for herself.
This book is very beautifully written, and well proof-read. So as to show simple emotions, the language was not complex, while still being creative and attractive in a probable effort to teach a lesson about love between a father and a daughter.
This masterpiece deserves a 4 out of 4 stars, and is a good read especially for those who want to have a glimpse in the mind of a fathers who usually keep their emotions as secret for life. The story is also a very well needed boost of determination for women who are paving their way in society dominated by the opposite sex.
