Hemmingway had three sons and had always ached to have a daughter and this novel is about the daughter he never had.

Though Finley 'Finn' Hemmingway was born on the same day as his father. Though she was always written on his books, she always had a hard time garnering for her father's affections. Always getting caught up by his father's fame, she finds herself made some enemies that made her life hard, especially when she entered her new school, although she never told her mother about this, thankfully there are some people who are compassionate and understanding that helped her get through the bullying and all the spiteful things said to her. Finn's parents are divorced and her father married for four times. She was happy to hear that his father would break up with the woman he dates or marries but then to be disappointed again to find that his father finds himself a new one again. It was hard for Finn and her mother to adjust at first as her mother really loved his father and it took a great deal of damage to her and her mother but was able to cope up with things as time passed by. Her mother remarried but still never had she spoken bad things about him. Her father Ernest was never emotionally available to her as she said he was 100% reliable, 60% of the time and that was when he is sober. As you read her story you can feel all her struggles of being in the shadow of his famous father and her brothers. She was always told that she is to tall and she looks to much alike to his father like that is such a bad thing and also that she is ugly. As she couldn't make much impact to her father's writing and at the same time also couldn't find her true love she chose to put all her energy into becoming a lawyer in a male dominated profession. As that was not stressful enough, growing up she also endured depression and the horrific world war 2.

At first I had a really tough time reading this novel and was about to quit halfway as there are some words that I don't know really know the meaning and I had to search the meaning of the words everytime and that made it hard to fully grasp at first and had to reread it from time to time. Though when you allow yourself to let the book guide you through the story it would make it much more easier to read and from the very first page of the book to the last page of it I thoroughly enjoyed it. When I read it somehow I felt like I was the one experiencing all her struggles and and that made me experience some mixed emotions. I really enjoyed her story and would really recommend someone to read this book. Read for yourself and see all the struggles she will experience in the story. I guarantee that it is a four out of four story.
