Review of First Lessons
After a gruesome car accident, an independent modern woman finds herself transported back in time into the body of a fat medieval countess named Lilian. With no modern plumbing, no sanitary hygiene, no privilege of proper healthcare and technology, and a philanderer for a husband, will she survive the harsh land or find herself tied to a stake?
Lina J. Potter's First Lessons is the story of Aliya- a 21st-century Russian doctor who dies in a car accident. But, her soul goes back in time into a body of a countess. Seeing the plight of the people there, she decides to improve the standard of living among the people living in the villages. Potter is a fantastic storyteller. Her vivid descriptions of the medieval setting leave nothing to the reader's imagination. I found myself captivated throughout the story from the start to the end.
One of the primary reasons I fell in love with this book is the story's plot. Lilian is the countess of Earton in the kingdom of Ativerna. She finds that her unfaithful husband's comptroller has been emptying the treasury and heavily taxing the peasants, pushing them on the verge of being destitute. She takes matters into her own hands and travels to Altver to replenish the food stocks so that no one dies out of starvation in the winter. She makes dangerous enemies and reliable allies along the way.
I loved the character development of Lilian as the story progressed. She was not a damsel in distress. She did not let setbacks stop her from achieving her goal. Her headstrong mentality earns respect from her friends and foes alike in her new world. With the help of her medical background in her previous life, she becomes a successful healer. Her wit, sharp presence of mind, and inventions even command the attraction of the officials and the king.
Lastly, there are thrilling side storylines that happen throughout the story. The reader can infer that these storylines will play an essential role in the next book. All of these storylines will inadvertently affect Lilian. I am waiting for the next book to see how this would play out. I am also looking forward to seeing more of Leif and Ingrid in the next book. These two Virmans captured my heart.
I do not have anything negative to say about this book. This book has exceeded all my expectations. One factor that differentiates this time-travel book from the rest is the strong female protagonist. We see Aliya bide her time before making the next move. Everything she does is strategic and calculated. She first learns about her surroundings- from geography to demography which makes her prepared for anything that comes her way. I was not too fond of Lilian's husband- Jess. His complete disregard and disrespect for women certainly make him unredeemable. I hope Potter knows what to do with this character in the coming books.
First Lessons is the first book of A Medieval Tale series. The book is well-edited. Due to the reasons mentioned earlier, I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars rating. There are no explicit erotic scenes. But you do find sexual connotations and innuendos. I recommend this book to a mature audience who like reading sci-fi time travel books.
