Review of The Captain's Destiny

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Captain's Destiny" by Gernot Hucek.]
Count Florian von Hohenwart had achieved military greatness at a young age through his training at the prestigious Theresian Military Academy. But even his extensive education could not prepare him for the outcome of World War One. After sustaining a career-ending injury, he finds hope through his budding relationship with a young nurse, Isabel Raimund, who aids in his recovery. But their passionate love is cut short when Florian finds himself reassigned to diplomatic duty in the United States of America. Despite their efforts to stay connected, their lives take them in separate directions. As the political climate of their homeland changes and life serves them various obstacles and painful challenges, can love find a way to bring each of them through to brighter days?
Read The Captain's Destiny by Gernot Hucek to learn all about the exciting life of Count Florian von Hohenwart. I loved the number of historical events and places woven into this 360-page historical romance novel. The book outlined the main events of WWI and depicted how the tensions affected relationships at the time. Florian was torn from his first love Isabel and thrown into the American political and societal divisions of whether or not to join the war. I enjoyed reading about Florian's loyalties to his home and way of life and admired his efforts to grow and adapt to the changes in culture and lifestyle. I also appreciated his viewpoints and perspectives as he found himself in the precarious position of being an Austrian diplomat in America with increasing pressure for the U.S. to join the allied forces.
In many ways, this novel was a sort of historical scrapbook. I loved the letters shared between various characters, the photographs interspersed throughout the pages, and even the type-writer style font that gave The Captain's Destiny a nostalgic feel. The book also featured many German words, phrases, and places to add to the story's authenticity. I particularly enjoyed how the author would include the details of each location of historical significance along the way. I also enjoyed the descriptions of cultural customs: the celebration of Christmas on the 24th of December, the exchange of cordial greetings, and not talking about business until after personal news and pleasantries have been exchanged.
Unfortunately, there were many editing issues with this book. In addition to various proofreading errors, several confusing run-on sentences were hard to understand. Therefore, I gave The Captain's Destiny three out of four stars.
This book would be an excellent choice for readers who enjoy WWI novels that feature a romantic storyline. The straightforward and factual narrative expressed the story's events in an easy-to-follow plot in a standalone novel. There was mild sexual content and minor swearing throughout the story.
