The book, Redemption Bound, is a modern day parable of how addiction and bad choices can place one in bondage and lead to their demise. The author, S.K. Alfstad, makes the inspiration for his main character, Beni, known in the preface. Beni was a real person that was found dead in an irrigation canal near the author's home. The sad story made S.K. Alfstad question the life that Beni may have led and how he ended up in that canal. Redemption Bound attempts to tell a cautionary tale of how to avoid and learn from Beni's many bad choices and mistakes.

I was taken by surprise by Redemption Bound. Beni's story took on a life of its own and I found myself rooting for him at every turn. Beni's story could be anyone's story and is the story for many struggling with addiction and bad choices. Beni's mentors tried to caution him by telling stories of musicians and their music. Many of these songs I knew from the past, but I did not know the meaning and significance of them. It was a great way to express the true feelings and struggles of many addicts. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writing style and only found one punctuation error as I read.

Although I enjoyed Redemption Bound, I thought there were times where the author was trying to make a forced point through a mentor's monologue or a mentor's discussion with the two main characters. Many of these forced points dealt with political or cultural issues of our day. For instance Marquise is a person of color and he is helped by a police officer, which led to a whole discussion on why all police officer are not bad, alluding to the current "defund the police" debate. Although profanity was not prevalent throughout the book, there was one chapter where it was excessive. I understood that the author was trying to bring two characters to life, but it was still excessive.

I personally would rate, Redemption Bound four out of four stars. It is not only a wise tale of how addiction and bad choices can affect one's life, it also gives great advice on how to avoid the path leading to destruction. If I had a friend struggling with addiction and bad choices I would most definitely hand them this book.

I think there are times many of us have tried to reach out and help friends and family with their issues. Sometimes we run out of words. S.K. Alfstad's book,Redemption Bound, should be one of those books that is on our bookshelves that is available to hand to those when there are no more words to be said. I know it will be on mine.
