Bird in a Snare by N. L. Holmes is a fascinating murder mystery set around 1350 BCE in ancient Egypt. The story follows Lord Hani, a well respected member of Egyptian society, who is asked by the King to investigate the murder of Abdi-ashirta, a powerful leader of a group of outcasts. Rich descriptions take the reader on a journey with Lord Hani as he and his trusted secretary, Maya, travel across Egypt to interview potential murder suspects. As they set out to uncover the mystery of Abdi-ashirta’s murder, Lord Hani and Maya uncover more scandals and betrayals than they could have ever predicted.

The author effortlessly provides the reader with total immersion by painting robust imagery of ancient Egypt and the complex Egyptian society that was played throughout the pages. Lord Hani was a wonderfully developed character who had many layers to his personality and when the book ended, I found myself missing Lord Hani and his delightful family. Some of my favorite parts in the story were the sweet moments between Lord Hani, his wife, and their children.

The provided map of the ancient Egyptian Empire as well as the Glossary were immensely helpful as I entered the world of Lord Hani. Without the map, I would not have realized how large ancient Egypt was, nor how far Lord Hani and Maya traveled as they attempted to solve the murder. I imagine the author’s background as an archaeologist was useful in helping the story come to life and I found myself more trusting of the details of the Egyptian world knowing the author’s unique experiences.

It wasn’t until near the end of the book that I realized several years had passed throughout the duration of the story. I believe if I was provided more timeline context in the story, I would have better understood the passage of time. I also had a difficult time in the beginning keeping some of the characters straight as many of them had complex Egyptian names, however I do not fault the author for keeping the names authentic to the ancient Egyptian time period.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The author beautifully painted the ancient Egyptian world and leads the reader through a fascinating murder mystery ripe with societal corruption and discord. The characters in the story were incredibly well written and the ending of the story left me eager to read the next book in the series.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is fascinated by ancient Egyptian history and loves to get lost in a good murder mystery.
