Review of Weak Love and Strong Love
Weak Love and Strong Love by Hollie Jean Huff is a romance story about several married couples who experience the temptation of having an affair. One couple in particular, Constantine and Katerina, fall victim to this temptation. This book follows Katerina and her family and the effect her decision to partake in an affair has on them. She has two children, a teen son and a young daughter, both sensitive and internal thinkers. Each of them, along with Katerina’s husband, has to find a way to cope with the fallout of Katerina’s affair.
While this book focuses on the topic of romance and affairs, it was written very tastefully. There are no explicit scenes, and this was one aspect I really loved about it. I also enjoyed the exceptional wit of the author's writing style. More than once I laughed unexpectedly at a profound truth communicated with subtle irony or humor. The pace of the story was quick and breezy. I enjoyed how quickly I moved through the chapters.
One of my lesser favorite aspects of the book was the storytelling style it was written in. It felt similar to being told a fairytale as a child. While that in itself was not a bad thing, as a whole it kept me from feeling more deeply connected to the characters. I felt like I was observing them from afar, and while they and their stories were entertaining, I did not experience their emotions with them. I also got confused at times about which character I was currently reading. The connections were not always clearly written. Lastly, without giving anything away, the ending left the book feeling rather incomplete for me.
I give this book a 3 out of 4 stars. If I were able to give a half star, I would give it a 2.5 because of the reading difficulty that some of the writing caused. However, the topic and the whimsical characters in this book were joyful enough for me to give it a full 3 since I couldn’t give any half stars. Also, I found no spelling or grammar mistakes in this book so that also warrants a 3 instead of a 2.
I would recommend this book to readers who love subtle humor and quirky characters. Though the book is on the short side, I thoroughly enjoyed following these characters as they made their decisions about their relationships. This book would also be well-suited for those who enjoy romance but don’t want to read explicit scenes.
