Review of Bird in a Snare
Birds in a Snare By N.L. Holmes is a historical fiction novel set in 1350 BCE during the reign of Amenhotep the IV Akhenhaten. The story is centralized around the journey of Amenhotep Hani a diplomat under the rule of the Egyptian Empire, as he is assigned to investigate the assassination of Lord Adbi-Ashirta who he had recently hosted in his own home at the request of the King. Hani's journey along with his secretary Maya, leads them down a path of murder for hire, attempts on their own lives, and a test of loyalty between his king or his gods. Challenges present themselves at every corner as Hani sorts through secrets of political alliances, attacks on religious freedoms, and the safety of his family.
N.L. Holmes tells an amazing story of mystery and intrigue set in the foreground of political upheaval. Her knowledge and familiarity as a Doctor of Archeological Sciences provides the perfect setting for her characters to come to life, jumping right of the page and into your heart, as you follow Hani and Maya through this Journey.
Amnehotep- Hani is a diplomat serving under the King Amenhotep- Akhenhaten, when he is sent to investigate the death of Lord Abdi-Ashirta, a political leader in A’amo with sites set on becoming a King himself. Hani who is a loyalist to the recently passed King Father is forced to reckon with the idea that the King and political advisors he serves may be involved in a more nefarious plan that he could ever imagine. As political unrest is being forged by the new King Akhenhaten. Hani’s own sons’ alignment with these political leaders that challenge their families beliefs creates tension. Hani must solve the mystery of Lord Abdi-AShirta’s death, stand strong in his beliefs, and be sure to bring home his secretary Maya, who is betrothed to Hani’s daughter.
Though set in 1350 BCE; this story of family, loyalty to country amid developing governmental debauchery, and loyalty to one’s own beliefs stands the test of time. I couldn’t help but look around our world and hope that someone like Hani is out there, doing the right thing. While this book does have some minor adult language, its overall storyline is very well written, with twists and turns that will have you hanging on by the seat of your pants.
I highly recommend this book to lovers of Historical Fiction Mysteries or those with interest in the Egyptian Empire. I do feel that N.L. Holmes’ writing is exceptional, her use of language and historically accurate terminology may have readers flipping to the glossary or character listings to keep them straight, as the historically accurate names were the equivalent to everyone being named; “Bob, Bobby, Bob-Roger, Bob Rogerson” (example purposes only). I give this book 4 out of 4 stars, the editing/writing seems very professional with 2 grammatical errors noted.
