Review of Brodie
The town marshal arrives on the scene and learns of a horrific murder. Overcome with grief and the urge to avenge his girlfriend, the marshal roped Brodie in. The pair’s investigation points to the local pastor as a suspect. When they close in on the pastor, they uncover a human trafficking syndicate. Brodie was now conflicted. Not sure whether to change the trajectory of their mission and rescue the human trafficking victims or avenge Lily’s death. Sanity prevailed, and they elected to avenge Lily’s death and rescue the victims of human trafficking.
The tables turned, and the hunter became the hunted. Despite losing a limb, Brodie relentlessly pursued those who were behind the trafficking syndicate. Find out who was behind the trafficking syndicate and learn whether justice was served for Lily.
Brodie by McKendree Long is a fictional novel set in Sweetwaters, Texas. Although the story was set in the 1800th century, the storyline is relevant, educational, and captivating. The book is 215 pages long and was neatly arranged. The storyline unfolds in a logical format, and it was satisfactorily delivered.
The novel educates readers about values, ethics, compassion, and empathy. For instance, Lily left behind a 13-year-old boy named Billy. Billy was mentally challenged and became an orphan after her passing, but Brodie and the marshal took good care of him. While pursuing vengeance, Brodie did not dishonor his oath as an officer of the law. He proved that justice can be attained without breaking the law.
Long did a brilliant job of character development. The characters were well developed, multifaceted, and dynamic. The scenarios were plausible while also being dramatic and entertaining. Billy’s growth in the novel was one of the many aspects of the book that I liked. Despite being mentally challenged, he played a pivotal role in solving his mother’s murder case. I had expected his character to be phased out since he had suffered brain damage and had assumed the title of an orphan, but that was not the case.
I rate this book three out of four stars. Although it has an interesting storyline, there were some glaring grammatical issues, and given these flaws, it wouldn’t be fair to give it a perfect score. The author’s writing style is appropriate for the 1800s, but sometimes I found it difficult to understand.
The novel has profane terms but nothing offensive. I recommend the book to anyone who enjoys western adventures with elements of crimes and murder. Sensitive readers must note that the novel has some violent scenes.
