From 32 BC to 4 AD major historical events occurred all over the Mediterranean Sea. This events still affect the world today. The main characters in Casper: Last of the Magi by Fred Faikor seem to end up in the middle of all of it. This story starts with an 18-year-old Casper being escorted into an audience with Queen Cleopatra. Casper is going to be sent on a diplomatic mission to see King Herod of Judea for support against Octavius Caesar of Rome. Casper is then introduced to is partner is this adventure, the Queen’s concubine Thah. Using their combined smarts and skills, they manage to navigate several important historical events. Their story starts with the meeting of King Herod and goes on to the fall of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony. Casper and Thah manage to get on the good side of Octavius Caesar (later named Augustus) and become his diplomats. Casper in his youth was a student of two magi, who predict Jesus’ birth. These three magi travel to meet Jesus, and save him from King Herod’s paranoia. Of course, this is only a sampling of the missions Casper and Thah get into!

Fred Faikor is an historian, and it shows in how he brings this world to life. He spent some time developing fully dimensional portraits of real players in history of this time. I loved that he spent some time on forgotten women in history, or maligned like Cleopatra. Octavia and Livia who were the women around Augustus Caesar during this time, are described as the power behind the throne. Cleopatra story is told truer to life than what I learned from reading Shakespeare’s version! I also loved the pictures, maps and illustrations the author included depicting life during this time. The slices of daily life among Casper and his family made history come to life. While I could not find any obvious errors, the formatting was not to my liking. I definitely would love some chapter breaks in this story! The story was really well written otherwise. The only plot hole in this book is how one person could end up being in so many different crossroads in history. Since this story is very well written, and has very strong male and female characters, I would gladly rate this book 4 out 4 stars!

Casper: Last of the Magi is for someone who is at least 16 or so. There is some mild sexual content, as well as a few choice curse words in Latin! The equally strong male and female characters in this story are a draw to any reader. If you wanted to know what life was like during a certain point in history, and time travel hasn’t been invented yet, Casper: Last of the Magi by Fred Faikor is for you!
