Review of Safe Place
Safe Place by B. Delamere is a book narrating the lives of two people who meet each other by accident without knowing that they are more connected than they had ever expected. Rory is a driver who delivers packages for people. When his car breaks down when he goes to deliver a package, he meets Rhona, an older woman who lives alone. They strike up an unlikely friendship. Their friendship grows to tremendous heights till they become confidantes to one another. This book is a comprehensive account, spanning several years, of the lives of people who do not know they are connected in history but become relatively close due to what they are sure is a coincidence.
This book makes excellent use of flashbacks. This is one of the positive aspects of the book. It uses flashbacks to tell stories of events that have occurred a long time in the past. Not only does it tell stories, but it also uses flashbacks to explore and delve deeper into the lives of several characters, like Brynn, Zena, and even Jonjo and Lizzie. This fills in so many gaps in the story and answers several questions that the reader may have.
Another positive aspect of this book is the use of suspense. From the beginning of the book, the author built up the suspense around the life of Rhona, and when it explains her life, more suspense was created and wasn't cleared up until towards the end of the book. This makes it more interesting and satisfying to read.
Another positive aspect of this book is the use of descriptive words. The author makes use of various descriptive words which paint pictures roti of various events happening at any point in time. This immerses the reader into the activities going on in the book. It enables the reader to clearly understand what is going on in the book at any point in time.
One negative aspect of this book is the diction. This book makes use of some Irish words which were left unexplained and even difficult to read. Though most of those words were names of places, it was difficult to read, and this made reading the book fairly difficult in those instances.
This book contains many errors, which leads one to believe that it is not professionally edited. The errors contained are a bit weird and indicate that the writer is not a native speaker of English. An example of this is, in so many instances throughout the book, the author meant to write 'and' but instead wrote 'an,.' This appears in several locations in the book.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I would have rated this book higher, but due to the aforementioned negative aspects and also the errors contained within, this seems a good rating for this book. I would recommend this book to all who love suspense-filled books and also a family drama.
