Review of Tour of Duty
Tour of Duty by William H. Coles is a story about Miles Ballard. He is a simple, honest guy who desires to improve his career and seek the truth, even in the face of significant opposition.
Miles had just graduated from medical school and had just finished his internship. He was inducted into the US Air Force in 1960. He went to France to serve as a military doctor. At the base, he met his commander, Colonel Barney Springer, who really despises good things happening at the military hospital. Miles was assigned as the General's medical officer, and the General would never regard him with the respect he deserved. All these were what he battled on a daily basis until an ex-girlfriend showed up on the scene. His ex-girlfriend showing up made him make some sensible choices. What were these choices?
Tour of Duty by William H. Coles is an interesting novel that revolves around several characters. As a reader, you will be transported through the lives and experiences of interesting characters like Miles, the protagonist, Ingrid, Oliver, and so many others. William H. Coles is a brilliant writer. This work shows how fluid he is as a writer, and it demonstrates how he can excellently write and develop his characters.
I love the fact that the author's work challenged me to check up on new words I came across in this book. There were some strange and interesting words I hadn't seen before, and it immediately piqued my interest. This would even make me check the author's other works. The author allows me to have a glimpse of what is happening or what might have happened in the military world. I could see situations like bullies and ego wars. Also, this work exposes the mystery of the work of art. I learned a lot about art and painting from this short story. It was clear that the author was not only versed in storytelling but also in art. You could really learn how to be a fine artist by just reading the book.
Also, as a history lover, I really enjoyed reading this book. It is clear the author is versed in historical knowledge too. History regarding the Cold War, the Holocaust, and the Vietnam War are covered in this work.
There was nothing I disliked about this book. I enjoyed reading every bit of it. The book was exceptionally edited because I found no errors. Therefore, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to lovers of stories laced with art and history.
