Review of Granite and Gravity
Vivian Elani’s Granite and Gravity brings historical fiction to a new level. The storyline of this book takes place in Brooklyn in the 1870s and 1880s. The Brooklyn Bridge, an incredible feat of engineering and persistence, is under construction during this time and will change the landscape of New York City forever. The main characters are souls who are incarnated into human lives to learn valuable lessons about themselves and help fellow souls along the way. All souls in the book are part of one soul group who work together to reach enlightenment under the direction of the novice soul conductor, Aria. In their human lives, the soul group struggles to learn humility, forgiveness, and kindness despite dealing with life’s biggest challenges.
This book is a unique historical fiction novel. I do not typically read books about reincarnation, but this book is not pressing a religious agenda. Granite and Gravity is simply a beautiful story explaining life’s struggles. My favorite part of the book was the changing point of view from characters to souls. Readers can immerse themselves in each character’s story and how each human incarnation affects the soul. The author did an excellent job of bringing the lives of the soul group to a conclusion without a predictable ending or plot.
There was nothing I disliked about this book. At first, I was slightly confused about the connection between the souls and the human characters, which I did not like. After continued reading, I enjoyed discovering what was happening as the plot progressed instead of knowing it all at the beginning. I wish I had a sequel to read now that I have finished Granite and Gravity. I found only two minor editing errors in the book, and these errors did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the novel.
I rate Granite and Gravity 4 out of 4 stars. The book had two minor errors, as I mentioned before, but they did not hinder my reading and therefore did not affect my rating. This novel is professionally written and well edited. The author includes accurate historical information, and their careful research is noticeable in the plot. Elani thoughtfully organized their storyline, and the switches between the soul world and human life are easy to follow.
I recommend this novel to any reader interested in the 19th century, particularly the history of New York City and Brooklyn. The author does an excellent job of immersing the reader in 1870s life and what the area of New York was like in this period. This book does not seem to appeal to any one religion. However, there is a central theme of reincarnation in the story, as the author shows the souls during multiple lives as humans. I did not notice any specific religious beliefs regarding reincarnation or other themes in the book.
