Deceitful Survival by LC Lee is a book about love, faith, hope, family, rejection, and survival. The book centers on the lives of Rene and Elizabeth and how they find forbidden love; their struggle to survive and nurture a family in a world where they aren’t wanted. The story begins with Elizabeth's life, her struggles, and her decision to join the Coventry and become a nun in order to escape her previous life. During her first assignment to Haiti, she meets Father Rene, who was in charge of the church, and she becomes instantly attracted to him.

The book was very interesting. I had a lovely read. I was exposed to a lot of things about life in the 1800s before there was technology. It was also very informative about the early Catholic church and its practices and also the culture of Africa, particularly among the Haitians and other surrounding tribes, from their mode of dressing to their lifestyle, their sense of community, and their food. The author also dealt with discrimination amongst the French and Spanish people.

There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like about the book. It had me on an emotional roller-coaster. The beginning was really sad, and as I read on, I became hopeful, then happy. The author’s style of writing was really great. I loved the romance in the story. It was really warm and I was glad Elizabeth was able to experience love despite the career path she chose after the horrible experience she had at home.

My rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars. Overall, the book was easy to read and follow, quite captivating and intriguing. The plot, the story line, and the twists and turns kept me curious enough to finish reading without any boring moments. I did not find any errors in the book. It was perfectly edited. I like how the author presented Elizabeth as a compassionate person trying to save the love of her life like she tried to save her mother. It was really a great book, and I found no reason to deduct a star.

I would recommend it to anyone who likes reading stories about nuns and priests; this is an interesting one. It also shows what they go through while serving humanity. Also, people who love humanitarian activities will love reading this book. I would also recommend this book to people who run non-governmental organizations; they will learn a lot from it. Anyone who is looking for something fun, interesting, and exciting to read can pick it up.
