Virginia Gemanar is no stranger to hardships. Within just the last few years she had lost her father, who had meant the world to her; and watched a brother lose the ability to walk through Polio. These events were taxing, as they would be for anyone, but they also helped to shape Virginia into the strong woman that she is. This strength would become essential to Virginia as she, and her friends, worked together to decipher what happened to Virginia’s boyfriend Jenica, when he goes missing in November of 1957.

Luminita LaFlash wrote The House of Spark in a way that the reader felt as if they were right there with Virginia and her friends as they pieced together what must have happened to Jenica. Given that this story takes place in Romania during the 1950’s, it was of the upmost importance for Virginia and her friends to ensure they were not seen as having political views disagreeable to that of the government. LaFlash did an excellent job with ensuring that her audience felt this urgency for discretion throughout the book, especially when Virginia and her friends went to Jenica’s family for help. Virginia and her friends know that with Jenica’s family being part of the Communist Party, they will ultimately be their best bet in finding out what happened to Jenica. The delicacy which LaFlash utilized in portraying this encounter was perfect. Throughout this book the reader is constantly intrigued and interested in what Virginia and her friends are finding out regarding Jenica’s disappearance. Additionally, LaFlash did an excellent job with taking the time to properly explain each characters backstory. This is something which I have seen other writers struggle with, but LaFlash accomplished this seamlessly.

The House of Spark was so good that I couldn’t find any negative points. The care which LaFlash used when writing this book is very clear. She made sure that this book was seemingly historically accurate. LaFlash also ensured that there were captivating relationships developed throughout the book, keeping the reader engaged from beginning to end.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This was an intricate story with several twists and turns; however, The House of Spark was an easy read. There were very few errors found throughout the book, and at no point did I feel like the writing was bulky or awkward.

Anyone who likes historical fiction, mysteries, love stories and even suspenseful books will truly enjoy The House of Spark.
