The novel lives up to his reputation and adds more by including several love stories. Beginning with a toddler that loves horses and the neighbor girl to following the young man growing up as a cowboy with a poor reputation. Many are swindled by a few men and all end up in a gold camp broke. The cowboy gets a crew together and with lots of work manages to trap a lot of wild horses only to have the swindler try to steal them. A shooting occurs that allows the whole sale to go through. That gives enough money for the families and workers to move with a new start.
