[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Walking With An Open Heart" by Dusty White.]
Dusty White tells us her life story in Walking With An Open Heart. Dusty was an aspiring cheerleader in her teens, with the idea of finding a husband and having a family. After being betrayed by her first husband, she was forced to move back to her parent's house in Boise, Idaho, with her young son. Instead of receiving support from her family, they end up turning against Dusty, causing her to lose custody of her children. Fleeing from the pain of her situation leads Dusty to the doorstep of a brothel. That's not where her journey ends though. Dusty White goes on to own businesses, ranging from a massage parlor, a thrift shop, and even a trucking company.
I admire White's openness and honesty about her life experiences in a brothel. She talks about a difficult subject that would make most people uncomfortable, and she does it with confidence which I respect. I believe Dusty did what she had to do to survive in a time where women were frowned upon for being divorced and often rejected from jobs, especially if it was considered a "mans Job." I enjoyed learning about Dusty's life. She is a brave, determined, and hardworking woman that strived to better herself. It is motivational how Dusty can show kindness and support to others even though her past relationships had forsaken her.
There were some things I did not like, the first being the photographs. While I thought they were a great addition and the captions underneath were informative, the pictures are all in the middle of the book. Some photos spoiled what was next to be told in the remaining chapters. I think they should have been placed throughout the book to match the timeline or all placed at the end. Then I didn't enjoy the abrupt ending. I got left with so many questions. Did Dusty ever speak to her parents again? What happened to her first husband, Wayne? Did he ever come back into their son's life? Why did Annettes close? Did her children ever confront her for leaving? I wish White would have expanded more on these topics to give better closure to the reader.
For the reasons stated above, I rate this book a 4 out of 5. I believe more organization of the photos and more explanations would have enhanced my reading experience. There were a minimal number of errors, so I deem this book well-edited.
This book is a non-fiction story. If you already have a pre-judgment of people in the sex industry, then this book is not for you. But if you have an open mind, then this story can be inspiring.
