Review of The Vanished
The Vanished is written by Pejay Bradley. The story takes place in 1932, in Korea. It tells the story of Lady Sougyon who is a wealthy Korean woman. She is related to the king and leads a luxurious life. However, Lady Sougyon is bringing her son by herself. Lady Souyon had an arranged marriage when she was still extremely young. Unfortunately, the marriage was not successful. The story is mostly about Lady Sougyon's son. His name is Embon. Through Embon's story, we learn about what life was like in occupied Korea. We learn about the suffering of the Koreans under the Japanese occupation. Such suffering led the Koreans to rebel and plan an insurrection. This is a fascinating story about suffering, courage, love and resilience.
The main character in the book is Embon. He is the only son of Lady Sougyon. Since his mother's divorce, Embon has been estranged from his father. Embon is described as a bright young man. He is very attached to his mother and is very eager to please her. Embon likes the luxurious life he has. However, Embon will embark on a new life when he goes to study at university. Alongside the new friends he will make, he will discover a new side to his personality. Embon will become a courageous young man who can fight for his country's independence. There are many other characters who all contribute to Embon's development. His mother has a great influence on his life. She is fiercely independent. She is also intelligent and shows an interest in current affairs. She always wants the best for Embon. Another important character is Mr Seoh. Mr Seoh is a traditional Korean man who has a successful career in a bank. He is sad that his country is under the rule of the Japanese, but he wants to lead a peaceful life. He does not agree with his friend who wants to rebel against the Japanese occupation. He has many children and he wants to educate them the best he can. One of Mr Seoh's daugters is called Insoon. Insoon is a rebellious young woman. Embon's friends are Hain and Yangoo. They will greatly influence Embon. Hain and Yangoo will become essential characters in the story. They are patriotic and courageous. They will stop at nothing to free their country.
The story is written in a simple and direct style. There was only one mistake. It shows the book was professionally edited. The reader discovers the story from Lady Sougyon's point of view. The author uses the first person. Then, we are told the story in the third person. The author describes Embon's life. There is a very good development of the main character. There is a very good plot based on historical events. The story is easy to follow. It was extremely interesting to learn about Korea and the Japanese occupation. The author describes with great authenticity the Korean culture. The reader will feel empathy for the main characters who were suffering enormously under Japanese rule. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy a story about romance and history. I also recommend it to readers specifically interested in Korea's history.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. The story was gripping from the start. The characters are likeable and it is easy to feel empathy for them. I liked the details about Korea's way of life. It was interesting to read about Korean arranged marriages. Culture and traditions were at the heart of people's lives, and it was difficult to marry for love. I learnt about the Korean insurrection against the Japanese. I liked the development of Embon's character. I liked the fact that the characters met each other when you least expected it.
There is nothing I disliked about the book. I rate it five out of five stars.
