Donnelly tells the story of Andi Alpers, a genius student who does not apply herself and is on the verge of dropping out of a prestigious school. Her mother is an artist while her father is the scientist who has won a Nobel Prize. However, after the death of Andi's brother, the family becomes nonexistent. Also drowns herself with her music, pills, and solitude until she finds the diary of Alexandrine Paradise who finds herself in the middle of the French Revolution . As the pages turn, Andi finds it increasingly hard to cope with reality.
This novel has a great mixture of two stories that make you entranced by the book within the book. You will find yourself learning history and music theory all at once while the characters experience the pressure of school, death, and romance.
