Review of Forgotten Heroes of wW-II, the French Resistance
Forgotten Heroes of WWII The French Resistance by Luis Gil, is about a man named Chico, who immigrated to America when he was young. He was very intelligent and knew that he wanted to serve his country. When he was applying to join the military, they told him he would only be able to be a cook, even though he received a perfect score. He used his connections and was told he was going to join in helping with the most critical mission of WWII. The mission was to conduct counterespionage against the enemies of America and Great Britain. There were a lot of German Americans who were Nazi sympathizers and Chico and two other members of his crew were assigned to learn about one of the leaders of those sympathizers.
While this book was fictional, Luis Gil stated that the historical part was accurate. There was a lot of research that needed to be done in order to make sure the events were still factual. As someone who likes history, I found this book to be interesting and I learned things about WWII that I did not know about. Another positive to this book is that Gil wrote in a way that makes the reader able to visualize what was happening and learn about some actual events that happened in America during the second world war.
One thing that I believed to be a negative to this book, was that it jumped around a lot. It is important to read the title of the chapter as well as the location, in order to keep the events of the book separate. While I believe this to be a negative, it was also important because some of the jumping around was important to be better able to understand the background of the story.
I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. It was exceptionally well written and edited. The story was interesting and the fact that the events were accurate added to my liking of this book. The only negative was each chapter was in a different location about a different event, but it would eventually lead up to what happened at the end of the chapter before. As someone who is not necessarily the best at following and putting together stories, I found myself writing notes in order to keep all stories and people straight.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes history, specifically WWII. It also creates some intense moments, as the reader is listening to the story of Chico being a spy and hoping that he does not get caught. I would also recommend that the person reading this has to be good at following time gaps, background history, and storytelling across locations. Someone who is not interested in history in the slightest might not be able to appreciate the fact that there is a lot of historical background throughout the book which probably would make it harder for them to follow along with the book.
