Nico Corretti is finally retiring from the military. After eighteen life-shaping years of service in his nation’s army, he gets to spend time with his family, which consists of his two sons and his lovely wife. However, during a road trip, Nico meets a mysterious Russian woman in a bad, who warns him that he is not safe. Even though he now lives in beautiful Miami with his beautiful family, the Russian woman’s ominous words send him spiraling. Amidst the chaos, Nico is called to serve again, this time in Iraq. There, he finds the answers he is so desperately seeking. He would do anything to protect his nation and his family, but which path does this lead him down? Read Back To Serve by Cesare Giannetti to find out. The story is masterfully told, weaving flashbacks, mystery, action, and character development.

I was thoroughly hooked by this book from the very first page, which is a very rare experience for me. The plot may sound simple on the surface, but there was such depth to the characters that it made me very invested in what was happening. Whether the scene was packed with heartstopping action or tender father-son bonding moments, I truly cared about what was going on. There was a big feeling of authenticity throughout the book, and that made the book more digestible. You could tell that the author knew exactly what he was talking about. I cannot imagine how he must have felt, drawing from his own experiences to create a fictitious account.

My favorite part of the book was the depth found in the complex lives of soldiers. While Nico was excited to spend time with his family during retirement, he also found himself craving to serve his nation again. The responsibility that a soldier bears is unique and never-ending, and the book captures that so perfectly that it is almost tear-jerking.

The familial aspect of this book was so beautiful as well; whether it was Nico and his father, John, bonding over sports or Nico going to extremes to protect his family, it was so heartwarming to read.

There was absolutely nothing that I disliked about this book; it was perfect from the beginning to the very end. I also found the writing style to be flawless; I found no typos or grammatical errors in the book. I rate this book a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading about military life.
