Review of The Vision of Jenny Merkus
The Vision of Jenny Merkus is written by Hadassa Mor. It is based on historical facts. It tells the story of a Dutch woman, Jenny Merkus. The story takes place in the late nineteenth century. It mostly takes place in Palestine but also in some Balkan countries, as well as France and Holland. Jenny is deeply religious. She discovers God when she is very young because she is raised by her uncle who is a priest. When Jenny goes to Rome, she hears voices in Saint Peter’s church. The voices are telling her to go to Jerusalem where she must build a house for Jesus. Jenny is convinced that Jesus will descend on earth and come and live in the mansion she has built. The house will also be used to accommodate the poor and needy. The story describes Jenny’s extraordinary life, as she will dedicate her life to helping the less fortunate than her. It is an amazing story full of love, hope and resilience.
The main character in the story is Jenny. She is described as a courageous and generous woman. She also has faith and vision. She is very determined and will go to extreme lengths to build her house. She is fearless because she believes God is protecting her. She has many talents and is very intelligent. She can speak many languages and is keen to learn about different religions in the world. She is a philanthropist and does not hesitate to spend her fortune on her extraordinary project. To most, she is presented as delusional. However, she strongly believes in her worthy cause. No one can make her change her mind. There are many other characters in the story. Jenny will meet lots of people during her travels. She will develop strong friendships. Nevertheless, the friendships will not develop into a love relationship. Jenny’s only love is for God. She has no place for anyone else in her life. An important character is Kato who would like to build a life with Jenny. Kato has some influence on Jenny’s beliefs in life. Both women firmly believe in equal rights between men and women. They are feminists and are well ahead of their times.
The story is written in a fluent style. It is written in the third person character. It is a fascinating story, mixing historical facts and fiction. The story is well written, although there were a few spelling mistakes. It is an easy story to follow. The author is very knowledgeable about what happened in the Balkans and Palestine in the nineteenth century. Jenny is a very likeable character, and the reader will admire how courageous she has been throughout her life. This book will appeal to most readers interested in good historical fiction. It will also appeal to people interested to discover an amazing historical character.
I loved the story. I had never heard of Jenny Merkus, even though she was a truly heroic person and achieved some incredible things in life. It is always interesting to learn about people who have fought in battles and conducted themselves as heroes. However, a person like Jenny Merkus remains unknown to most. I liked the story because I warmed to the main character. Jenny Merkus was remarkable. I enjoyed all the historical facts. I particularly enjoyed learning about the spreading of Islam throughout the world. I learnt about the Jerusalem syndrome when people identify with a character from the Bible and start acting as this biblical character. What a fascinating fact!
There is nothing I disliked about the book. I rate it five out of five stars.
