Two engineers get their hands on a first-hand account of one of the biggest man-made disasters, the Quebec Bridge disaster. Was it truly a mistake or negligence that caused so many deaths? Esther and Ben have only a few days left in their semester when they find themselves paired up for an assignment for the Quebec bridge collapse. While searching through the reference materials, they stumbled upon a journal written by a man named Alec Durand who was the site engineer for the Quebec Bridge at the time.

Catchy right from the start, the book The Bridge by Andrew Palmer traps a reader with a vivid imagination. It is fiction based on true events. Ben is the typical cool student with parties and hangovers looming in his head while Esther is intelligent and organized and serious. The pairing of these could not be more opposite. Even after their differences their getting along with each other so quickly did not feel odd. I loved how each character in the story, even the ones with much less importance had a depth to their character which made them seem more real than just a story. Like how Ben’s life was affected by his mother’s divorce or how Esther coped with the problems and benefits of living in a strict family. Both stories which were going side by the side of Esther and Ben and Alec and Ginette were sensibly written. Many lessons can be learned from this short book of only 200 pages. Alec Durand is a man of caliber but in poverty and his struggles to give his wife a home she can be comfortable in is charming. The best part of a fiction book based on a real event is that it can make you believe it and this book is just that. Filled with intricate details, deep love, true friendship and hard work, and more, this book will make you think about your life and values more deeply. The book shows more reality in life than I could have imagined.

I could not find anything in the book that I did not like. The heart-wrenching story of the disaster could not be made into a much better fiction.

The book was professionally well-edited. I will give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I am giving this book 5 stars because I enjoyed reading every aspect of the book.

I will recommend this book to anyone looking for fiction based on true historic events.
