Review of The Historic Mind
The Historic Mind by Michael Hillery is a nice book that answers many questions about history and the role it plays in our lives nowadays. The book starts with an explanation of the job of historians. It piques your interest that a historian isn't just a storyteller. A historian can learn information about the past by looking at its traces. Then, it goes through the relationship between history and media. It tells us how each of them shapes the other. After that, it talks about historic sites and what you can see through them. Then, it moves to the relationship between history and museums. It provides a good discussion on how museums show what the organizations that support them want to show. It also discusses why we study history and how that affects our current lives. All of this and more can be found within the pages of that book.
I like many things about that book. I like that the style of writing is smooth and quiet. The writer shows her point without giving you the feeling of being in conflict. I later found out that the writer is Canadian, so that made a lot of sense. I like that the book answers some questions on the importance of history and why we study it. The book opened my eyes to some things I had no clue about. The most remarkable one was the discussion of museums and how they choose what to display.
I didn't find anything to hate about this book. I liked how it was free of complications. It was also not long enough to be boring. I believe it gives you some basic knowledge that can be a good starting point for your research if you get interested.
I gladly rate this book five out of five stars. I might have disagreed with the writer sometimes, but this didn't take away from the value of the book. The book was exceptionally well-edited. I didn't notice any errors while I was reading it.
Growing up, I didn't have that much interest in history and always wondered why it was taught in schools. This book gave me some answers. So, I recommend this book to anyone who would like to know why we study history and what the benefits of that are. I also recommend it to people who want to know the relationship between history and a lot of things we live with today.
