Power is something that transforms people into beasts and monsters; people who are looking for power bring destruction to themselves and those around them. In the book Dagger's Destiny, Linnea Tanner tells us a story about how a kingdom was destroyed and how ordinary people suffered from some people’s desire for power.

Catrin was the daughter of a king. She was accused of treason by the king because she helped an enemy. However, the king gave Catrin a chance to redeem her guilt. On the other hand, the king’s former queen and banished son wanted to take the kingdom from the king. The king wanted to save himself and his kingdom, so he decided to make an alliance with another king through marriage. The banished son finally gathered enough soldiers and attacked the king, and the king had to defend his people from this severe assault.

From this book, we can see how people are willing to sacrifice everything for power. The king forced his daughter to marry a stranger so he could have a strong alliance. The banished son wanted to be king, so he decided to kill his father. This book describes many of the Celtic people’s traditions, the activities they liked, and the rites they performed during weddings. It also describes what the warriors looked like and wore during that time. Some people in the book had magic powers. Some of them could transform into animals, like Catrin; some could control nature, such as the banished son, who brought earthquakes into a battle. The author constructs the story pretty well. I was shocked by what happened to Catrin; her final fate was totally different from what I thought. And I don’t find anything bad about this book.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The author offers an interesting work of fiction with the background of ancient Rome and Britannia. He precisely describes many characters' internal conflicts and emotions when facing challenges, dangers, or dilemmas. He also seriously presents many fights and battles between different factions, showing readers how brutal and bloody a conflict can be.

I would recommend this book to people who love ancient history, such as the ancient Rome, or are interested in some stories about human struggles, personal adventures, or magic. Readers will find that the book can meet their expectations for a great type of fiction. And after finishing this book, people may rethink pursuing power.
