Review of Apollo's Raven
Apollo's Raven by Linnea Tanner is the first book in the Curse of the Clansmen and Kings series, and it revolves around Catrin, the youngest daughter of King Amren, the Cantiaci king, who was born with the power of the ancient druids.
When the Romans arrived at the shores of Britannia, they came to the Cantiaci tribe, demanding more tribute and threatening to start a war and overthrow King Amren and make Marrock, King Amren's son and Catrin's half-brother, king. Marrock has the support of Rome and King Cunobelin, King of Catuvellauni and client King of Rome. King Amren has agreed to go to King Cunobelin's territory to negotiate terms with him and the agents of Rome but has demanded that Marcellus, son of Lucius Antonius, the Roman senator, stay at Cantiaci to ensure his safety. King Amren tasks Catrin with getting information from Marcellus. Catrin and Marcellus spend time together, and Marcellus worms his way into her heart. Are Catrin and Marcellus soul mates? Will Catrin do as her father asks, or will she let love cloud her judgment? Will King Amren conclude the negotiations successfully? Will Marrock claim the Cantiaci throne?
Apollo's Raven is a great book. The author did a commendable job. I love the writing style. All the characters were well-developed, and it had an interesting storyline. I loved how Linnea Tanner displayed the cultural differences between the Cantiaci tribe and the Romans, from the food and the living quarters to their chariots and fighting style. Their similarities were also mentioned. One is that they both worship the same god but call him different names. The author also portrayed the value of duty and how parents arrange political marriages for their children to forge strong political alliances. The power of love was shown by Tristan, who served King Amren so he could be close to Rhiannon.
There is nothing to dislike. I encountered some errors while reading, showing that it was professionally well-edited. I have read the second book in the series and have gained more insight into the storyline from this book, and I am eager to read the third book in the series and find out how the story ends.
For the reasons stated above, I rate his book 5 out of 5 stars. The book has a map of Britannia, giving the reader a better understanding of the tribes within Britannia, their boundaries and their political alliance. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction and books on magic.
