Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

Post by Belle_of_Amherst »

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden is a wonderfully written book following Nitta Sayuri’s rise to fame as a geisha in Japan. The author manages to weave depth and emotion into his writings about Nitta Sayuri’s life. This eloquent portrayal allows the reader to feel as though they are experiencing Sayuri’s life for themselves.

The book changes the reader’s perception of what a geisha really is. Through the book, the reader witnesses the hard work and perseverance that a geisha needs to become successful. They face fierce competition and must maintain tradition and elegance as the world changes around them. They go through extensive training in dance, music, and the traditional ceremonies of Japan, making a geisha a true artist.

The book is told in first person and is written in a way where the reader feels that Nitta Sayuri is telling us her story personally. This book is easy to follow and is quite a page turner. Once I opened it, I found myself unable to put the book down.

There are not many books out there that personally reveal the life of a geisha, and even less that are written as eloquently as this book was. What I really love about this book is how Nitta Sayuri tells her story in a riveting yet humble way. This book really shines a light on the value of life, which is essentially what we all wish to see in a memoir.

The characters, even those that do not frequently appear in the book, are all beautifully established. The reader can feel the emotions felt by Nitta Sayuri as she goes through life as a geisha.

I cannot begin to stress how truly wonderful this book was. It is one of my favorite books and I highly recommend it!
