Not What Meets the Eye is an action-adventure fictional novel written by Matrika Hay. It consists of thirty-two chapters and follows Antosha Scarlett, an archeologist with a tragic past that has come back to haunt her.

As the book begins, we meet Antosha returning on a ship from an expedition. After dropping off her artifacts at the museum in Avola Viete, she is attacked by an assassin and barely escapes. We are also introduced to Nathious Swanson, a warrior on a mission with a lot of secrets of his own. When Antosha is invited to an expedition in the Lost City by well-known archaeologist Tombask Winston, she is troubled, as the Lost City is where she lost her parents. She decides to make the trip by ship to the Lost City, and it is here that she meets Nathious. On the ship, there is more to worry about than just the sea. And at the Lost City, there is a lot more to uncover than just artifacts. How will Antosha make it through these issues? Find out in this gripping book.

I liked a lot about this book. The book was written in simple, easy-to-understand language. I liked the pacing of the book; even with its relatively longer length, it never felt dull or tiring. Each chapter pushed the plot forward in some manner or form. I loved the dialogue between the characters. It was organic and rather humorous at times. The book had a very cinematic feel; it was as if it was written specifically to be adapted into a movie. There were a lot of plot reveals that caught me unaware, which I liked. I particularly enjoyed the interactions between Nathious and Anthosha. A lot of them were cheeky and humorous. Overall, it was a truly enjoyable novel.

There were two things that I did not like about the book, though. Firstly, I loved Sahar as a character, and I wish she played a much larger role in the book. I felt like she had a lot more potential, and the conclusion to her role in the book came too abruptly. Secondly, the book does not have a table of contents, which was needed considering the book's seven hundred-page length.

I found only a couple of errors in the book. The book was professionally edited. Therefore, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I found the book enlightening. I truly enjoyed the book, and I didn't feel like its lack of a table warranted removing a star. As a result, I could not rate it any lower. I recommend this book to lovers of action and adventure novels.

700 pages, indeed quite a lengthy book. But with a good pace in the storytelling and humorous interactions between the characters I can see that the number of pages would not hinder the joy of reading.

I think the expedition of Antosha in the Lost City is something nice to read about; however, I will let others enjoy reading it, as I pass. The book's length is quite long as well. Nevertheless, congratulations to the author on BOTD!

The book is brimming with captivating adventures. I particularly enjoyed the sections that delved into the mysteries of the lost city, as they evoked fond memories of the thrilling atmosphere found in the "Mummy" movie. Great review 👍

Wow that’s a long book! Did you feel like it’s length was too long? Or would it have been better split into 2 more normal sized books.

In addition to the adventure and magic, the book is made attractive thanks to the unexpected plot reveals all along. And though it is a long read, the mystery and the characters make the read worth it.
