Review of The Spartan who Defied Rome
The Spartan Who Defied Rome by Anthony Vincent Bruno opens with the question of why people go along with the crowd. This is a central theme in this exciting book. The main character, Marcus Tychon Triarius, is a young man who dreams of a military career in the service of Rome. However, when asked to beat an already brutalized prisoner, Jesus, who is supposed to be crucified, he refuses to follow orders. Tychon argued that he had already been severely beaten. There was also something in his eyes that made Tychon feel as though hurting him was the wrong choice. This action set Tychon on a path to being a slave in the mines. On the trip there, he met a beautiful young woman, Katisa, who he fell in love with. Will Tychon escape slavery and be able to marry Katisa? What of the growing new religion centered around the man Tychon refused to beat? All answers are found in The Spartan Who Defied Rome.
This book does contain elements from the Bible. However, I thought that they were woven in well and explained well enough that those who do not have a lot of background knowledge or follow a different religion would easily be able to understand and appreciate what was happening. People from the Bible, such as Mary, Thomas, and Jesus, appear throughout the story along with characters, such as Tychon, who the author created. This blend of historical fiction and Christian literature was fascinating to read. I think anyone with an open mind would be able to enjoy it.
The only part I disliked about this book was the number of characters introduced. The book spans a significant portion of Tychon's life. During this time, he travels and meets many people. I often would get a little confused with the introduction of new characters. However, this was not a major issue and is possibly specific to me.
Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I only noticed a few errors throughout the book; I believe that it was professionally edited. My one dislike was not enough to warrant taking off a star. I thought the plot, character, and integration of Biblical events into a historical fiction piece were engaging from start to finish.
This book does contain some violence, so I do not recommend it for the squeamish. It is an excellent choice if you are interested in ancient Rome and seeing biblical events from the eyes of a nonbeliever.
