Review of Ninety Degrees at Midnight
Frustration after several failed attempts to conceive leads a young couple to set out separately to find a solution. Their discovery will open their eyes to their true happiness and passions. An ambitious sales executive extends his business trip to close a deal that will secure the promotion he has been working for. While waiting for his connecting flight, he receives an extraordinary offer from an unusual man that forces him to choose which plane to board. A group of German spies land discreetly on American soil for a sabotage mission. Each member contemplates the consequences if the operation is compromised.
Despite being depicted in various genres and settings, the characters confront the same question. What will they do?
Ninety Degrees at Midnight is a collection of poetry and short stories by Troy Bastian over the years. The short tales vary from historical fiction to fantasy and thriller. Each story takes unexpected turns, keeping the reader engaged. It exhibits the ability of the author to write in several genres.
What I loved best about the book was its organization. It was well thought out and presented several facets of the intention of the collection. The book does not have a table of contents. Given that there is a section for poetry and short stories, I thought of recommending adding one. It will be a convenient way to flip through the book. However, I soon realized that the absence of the table of contents was intentional. It will undermine the purpose of the collection. There are prominent clues to identify the works of the author. I will not say anything else to prevent revealing it.
The compilation spans the literary career of the author across several years. The genres and settings vary. Despite the years and diversity, a common thread links them. As the author grows in his writing career, he consistently delivers thought-provoking literature. The characters confront circumstances that compel them to reconsider their opinions regarding established notions and standards. New perspectives enable them to recognize their true happiness and passions. It examines attitudes toward career, family, love, relationships, and war. Some materials go back many years, but they remain relevant today.
Additionally, there is an underlying depiction of the concept of individualism. It provides food for thought, another feature I liked.
There is nothing I dislike about the book. Although I am not a big fan of poetry, the poems are part of the literary journey. I see the value of including them in the collection. The variety and unpredictability of the stories motivate readers to read the entire anthology. Each narrative offers something unique to the audience.
The language is conversational, and the words are simple. There are swear words. Although there are no graphic sex scenes, the content is suitable for an adult audience. There are references to self-stimulation for sexual pleasure and sexual activities between men, so I advise the discretion of a sensitive audience. The content is inoffensive to any religious group. It will appeal to readers who appreciate short stories on human nature and social issues.
The compilation exhibits the talent of the author in handling various literary types. It demonstrates a continued dedication to providing entertainment that encourages readers to think. The book is deserving of a perfect score. Unfortunately, due to editing issues, I must deduct a star. I suggest another round of editing and proofreading. That said, I give it four out of five.
