I really enjoyed reading Their Winter Burn by Mary Ann Trail. I had not previously read any other works by this author but will most definitely be reading the other books in this series. This story was easy to settle into despite it not being the first in the series following Jeffrey and Georgina Chadwick. It was easy to catch up with their previous adventures as the author reiterates key information as it becomes pertinent to this adventure. I found the character list at the beginning of the book quite daunting and promptly forgot every detail as soon as I had read it preferring to get to know them all as I read along. We meet the Chadwicks and their household two weeks after completing their journey to settle in Boston in the very cold winter of 1805, a far cry from the milder winters of Europe. The optimism felt of finally finding a house to rent that would accommodate them all was all to quickly tainted by the discovery of a dead body which was only made worse when they found out it was the son of their prospective landlord. The book follows Jeffrey and Georgina along with their household as they set out, at their landlords behest, to discover who had killed this young man and more importantly why. Their adventures and rejection of society norms of that time makes this a riveting read and therefore I would rate this book 5 out of 5. It was well edited, exciting and I formative of the lives of those who lived, worked and traded in Boston in the years following the American Revolution. Their Winter Burn would appeal to those who enjoy a good murder mystery set in history.
