Their Winter Burn is a historical mystery novel written by Mary Ann Trail. It is set in 1804, twenty years after the American Revolutionary War. Captain Jeffrey Chadwick arrives in Boston with his household to establish himself as a wine merchant. His household consists of his new bride, Georgina, a Scottish couple and their grandmother, whom they met on their voyage to America, Chadwick’s factor, Paddy, and two orphan girls, Margaret and Mairi. In their new house, which they rented through Chadwick’s uncle; the household finds a dead body.

Chadwick and his wife have a history of solving mysteries together and because of an attractive offer from the dead man’s father, Chadwick agrees to find the murderer. But life is certainly not easy in the bitter winter of Boston. The household has a lot of problems to tackle, from their less-than-ideal dwellings to the lack of winter gear and unfriendly neighbours. Will Chadwick’s household get used to Boston and make a life for themselves? Will Jeffrey find the murderer and what dangers will the family face due to this investigation?

Their Winter Burn is an excellent example of a good historical cosy mystery. Right from the beginning, the readers fall in love with the characters, their kind nature and their love towards each other. Each character is fleshed out and brought to life through the author’s amazing writing skills. The setting and atmosphere are very important for a historical novel and they are well executed in this book. The readers will feel the cold, the chilly wind and the snow through the detailed descriptions.

I loved the characters of Jeffrey and Georgina and their sweet romance. The newlyweds’ longing for each other in a house filled with people was described perfectly. Chadwick is a true gentleman and the way he trusts, admires and respects his wife is amazing. Georgina is a very interesting and bright character that brings life to the pages. The way they love the orphaned girls, Margaret and Mairi, is heartwarming. The murder mystery is weaved expertly throughout the novel and keeps the readers hooked. I didn’t see the plot twist coming and the way that Chadwick arrived at the solution was very satisfying.

There is nothing I disliked about the book. There are a few typos, but nothing that would distract the readers. There is only one instance of profanity. The violence is very minimal and the romantic scenes are not graphic.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars because I enjoyed reading it very much and there are only a few errors. I recommend this book to young adults and adults. I also recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction and cosy mysteries.
