Alberto Capuano, a Milazzo native and former Navy serviceman, found himself captured during a conflict and endured five years of imprisonment in East Africa's Kenya. Upon securing his release by purchasing his freedom, Alberto returned to a war-torn Milazzo, Sicily, ahead of his fellow captives. Struggling to survive, he took on menial jobs. One fateful day, he was hired to demolish old buildings for a resort project owned by Domenic Mizzi, a notorious mafia boss involved in numerous illicit enterprises.

After a day's work, Alberto decided to take a break and go for a walk. To his surprise, he stumbled upon a meeting between Mizzi and his henchmen, inadvertently overhearing a significant secret that would alter the course of his life. Rather than ignoring what he had learned, Alberto immersed himself in the underworld, drawing the attention of the mafia and endangering the lives of those around him, including his pregnant fiancée, Sienna Camilleri. The secret he had uncovered became a central focus of his actions, and he sought the assistance of Colonel Matteo Tongassi, Carabinieri Chief of Police for all of Sicily, and his friend, Vitto, in the gripping tale of The Eavesdropper by Peter Wise.

Peter Wise, a talented author, deserves commendation for his creative work in this novel, which spans multiple genres, including redemption, love, reconciliation, corruption, family, and action. Alberto's character undergoes a captivating transformation; initially, the war and captivity leave him appearing as a hopeless, survival-driven individual with a laborer's appearance. However, as he confronts the mafia and endeavors to win back his estranged girlfriend, there is a noticeable evolution in his character.

Another character worth noting is Colonel Matteo, portrayed as a stern, rarely-smiling figure. During his interactions with Alberto, although his demeanor doesn't change significantly, he displays a more caring side. Among the numerous quotes from Alberto's mother that resonate, the one that stands out is "Actions create the individual as much as the mind does," emphasizing the impact of one's deeds on personal development.

While The Eavesdropper is excellently written with impressive descriptions, it does contain noticeable errors and an excessive use of profanity. Despite these drawbacks, I rate the novel 4 out of 5 stars. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy mafia-themed narratives infused with elements of love and action.

What was the secret Alberto heard? I’ve always watched movies where getting involved with Mafias doesn’t end up well. I hope Alberto does not get himself killed. This is a great review. Well done!
