The Shot Not Heard Around the World is a piece of Historical Fiction by Charlie Damitz, a retired veterinarian. It is based on the infamous American Revolution between the North and the South, where a young man eager to fight the incoming British in the war finds himself facing a Redcoat. Still, both cannot see themselves pulling the trigger. This is a story of how he became the bravest during such a deadly time.

When I read the story, I understood clearly that the author had done his research on the American Revolution between the North and the South to get a better understanding of creating the overall setting of the story. How the author describes the background and the use of a musket in the story indicates that the author had a great deal of knowledge of American History, which is essential when writing Historical Fiction, as it is usually based on actual events. Hence, it would help if you were as historically accurate as possible.

I also noticed that the author has a decent amount of knowledge on medicinal practices from the American Revolution, which clearly shows that the author was detailed in doing his research while writing the novel. The thing that sells the excellent adventure story is the exemplary editing in the story with no signs of typos and bad grammar anywhere. I also appreciated that the two enemies formed a solid friendship despite being in a revolution and on opposite sides of the war. It gives me the vibes of The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas, with the only difference being that both characters lived.

The one thing I have an issue with is the fact that while the author does well in describing the landscape and the interactions between the two characters, I would also like the book to talk about the American Revolution and the battle it is taking place, talking about the conflicts between the two sides and any reactions from the Redcoats. As their friendship is tested, that would add an extra layer of conflict for the two characters.

Overall, I liked the story and will give it a five out of five. The depth of detail shown in the book about the American Revolution and medicinal care shows the author did his research, the theme of forbidden friendship is pronounced well, and also it had a good message that not everything can be solved through conflict and violence. I recommend this book to those interested in literature on the American Revolution.
