[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Her Side Of The Story" by Dominique Wright.]
"Her Side of The Story" by Dominique Wright is an excellent historical fiction novel that tells the story of Catherine De Medici from Catherine's own perspective. The book tells a captivating story of love, politics, betrayal, and war.
The story focuses on Catherine, an orphan Florentine girl who was betrothed to Prince Henry II, the second son of King Francis I, the king of France, when she was thirteen years old. Catherine was shipped off to France by her ever-ambitious uncle, Pope Clement VII, whom she'd been in his care since her parents' deaths. Forced to mature at an incredibly fast rate, she must survive a loveless marriage, pay no heed to gossip, and be careful of people who mean her harm.
One of the notable strengths of the book is the author's decision to make the chapters short and engaging; this allows the readers to completely focus on the book without losing interest or becoming bored. I also liked the book because, even if it was fiction, it allowed readers to get a completely different perspective on history. I also liked the pacing of the book; it maintained the perfect pacing for historical fiction; it wasn't too fast to prevent adequate character development; and it wasn't too slow to make the story feel dragged out.
I found myself without any dislikes whatsoever for the book, nor did I notice any weaknesses within the text. I found the book difficult to put down until I got to the end. Even though I did notice a few grammatical and typographical errors, they weren't significant enough to disrupt my reading experience.
Overall, I'd rate Dominique Wright's "Her Side of The Story" 5 out of 5 stars for its engaging plot, unique view of this particular aspect of history, and excellent pacing.
I'd recommend the book to adults and young adults who are lovers of historical fiction and romance novels.
