Author Linnea Tanner's novel Dagger's Destiny is a pleasure to read. A passionate and heroic story of the Celtic tribes which existed in ancient Britain, the book is a delightful blend of the history and mythology of the Celts and the Romans who invaded them. The novel, which is the second in the Curse of Clansmen and Kings series, follows the story of a Celtic princess, Catrin, who falls in love with a Roman enemy, Marcellus.
The tale of Catrin and her family is filled with the ancient beliefs of the Celts regarding their gods and sorcery, which makes for an engrossing read for mythology buffs. The story weaves around the fealty and betrayal of Catrin’s tribespeople, including her family. Catrin is accused by her father, King Amren, of treason for aiding her lover, Marcellus and she must prove her loyalty by defending her kingdom as a warrior. Her decisions change the course of the future of her family and tribe. She is the only one who can break the curse of her step-mother Rhan and save the kingdom from her half-brother Marrock.
The fast-moving fantasy entertained me with its surprising twists and turns. The invasion of ancient Britannia by Romans, their ambitions and political intrigues are interspersed with the mystical power of the Celts and druids in this historical fiction.
Though the book is a part of a series, it can also be enjoyed as a standalone novel. However, once we start reading, we will be so enraptured that we will be longing to read the rest of the series to know about the fate of the star-crossed lovers Catrin and Marcellus. We will also be hoping for a happy ending to the conflicts and mayhem that destroyed Catrin's tribe.
I will rate the book 5 out of 5 stars as it is a poignantly woven story and edited well with very few errors. The book, however, has some violence, profanity and sexual content. Hence, I suggest the book for mature readers.
