[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Warm Western Light" by RJ Miller.]
Warm Western Light by RJ Miller is a story about Western Wyoming and the pioneering spirit shortly after the end of the Civil War. It follows the life of Henry Wolcott, who is granted a piece of land after his service, and the struggles he faces to learn cattle ranching and how to raise a family on the Western frontier. The story spans a few generations as the reader gets to know the Wolcotts and their life on the range. The book also touches on the building of the railroad and some of the people and towns involved in its expansion.
This novel is at times historical fiction and at times a character tale of hardship and resilience. It is a beautiful story full of interesting and likable characters. The writing is at times poetic and really draws the reader in. I really enjoyed reading this book and felt invested in the plot. I could easily see this story being adapted for the screen.
My favorite part about the novel was the way the author wove in bits of history like the railroad building and oil drilling. I imagine the lives of the people in the story were very similar to the lives actually led by people during that time. It was interesting to read about what people went through to build homes for themselves in a territory unknown to them and not always friendly. Adding the historical references to the story helped shape the time period even better and gave me an idea of what it was like to live through that time.
I don't necessarily have a least favorite part of this book. The story kept me captivated until the very end. There was a range of emotions to be had throughout the novel, but the overall tone was optimistic and left me feeling content and fulfilled after reading.
While I enjoyed the author's writing style, I found quite a number of errors and typos. The book could definitely use another edit. It is for that reason alone that I have to give the book 4 out of 5 stars. If not for the clear editing mistakes, I would have given it full stars. Still, I would recommend this book to anyone. It's an exciting read that could be enjoyed by fans of history, westerns, adventure, even mystery, or romance. I even think younger readers could appreciate the tale if shared with an adult in a family setting. This is just a lovely story that I think could and should be enjoyed by all.
