Review of The Shot Not Heard Around the World
The Shot Not Heard Around the World by Charlied Damitz
April 19, 1775, changed the narrator's trajectory in life. Playing both the role of hunter and hunted, Jeremy, a 14-year-old boy, ran out of his house following his mother's instructions. The redcoats were invading their land, and a terrible fight was all ready to start. The boy, who was so skilled in hunting squirrels and rabbits, had to prepare for the British soldiers. Hiding behind a stone wall, he arranged himself with his musket. But when he found the scout approaching him, he could not shoot him,
"If you can’t kill your own father, how can you kill someone else’s father?" Page 5
Astonishingly, when the man saw him, he even could not use his rifle though he aimed at him.
"If you can’t kill your son, how can you kill someone else’s son?" Page 5
An unspoken understanding bound those two people at that moment. And for their lives that undeniable cord remained intact.
Jeremy tried hard but could not topple the soft corner of his heart to kill an enemy and prove his bravery to his kinsmen. Though mistakenly he was considered such by his community he was not responsible for a single life. He was guilt-stricken for his inability to be like the others, for his soft compassionate heart. And he confessed it to the Surgeon Thorndike. The venerable doctor took no time to recognize the possibility within him and asked him to join as his assistant.
Fate reunited Jeremy with that man whom he could not kill and who once could not kill him. One day, being wounded, Roger Poole was sheltered and taken care of by Jeremy and they both joined in their new project of being surgeon's assistant. Doc Thorndike's generous heart and lovely nature attracted both. And with him, they travelled to battlefields to tend the wounded.
One shot that was not fired once changed a lot in the lives of two people, Roger and Jeremy, and also many people whose lives were saved by them.
"And it was all because of the shot I didn’t take—the shot not heard around the world."

There are no editorial glitches or other negative issues within this short narrative. I have enjoyed reading the book very much. The narrator's voice is true to his heart. He describes his feelings, raw and pure in a simple straightforward way without a pinch of fancy. His jolly nature is exposed by the funny episode of Mr. Gompers and his tooth. The honesty of the narrative voice makes the book more appealing than anything else. I rate the book 5 out of 5 for this excellent story and this great message to the world. And I wish that everyone would read this book to feel how saving life can be more courageous than taking it. It reminds me of the old lie "Dulce et decorum est/ Pro patria mori" ("Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen)
