I found this book, Dream Walkers Don’t Play Racquetball by Daniel Spade, an interesting novella. It was called a novella because it was less than 100 pages, so it could not be called a book.

This story is an autobiographical look into the life of the author. He had a very complicated life, and he would “dream walk,” as he would call it. Some of the dreams were premonitions that he would have concerning other people, which would scare him. At one point, the doctor prescribed a sleep study, and it was found that he quit breathing 120 times. I’m not sure if that was an hour or the whole night, but regardless, the doctor put him on a CPAP machine.

He had to quit work at one point to take care of his parents, who were both ill and they were also hoarders. The Dept. of Family Services found out and put his parents in a nursing home. Daniel was eventually able to get his father out, but not his mother, and she ended up dying there.

The book had a massive number of errors. Enough so that it took away from enjoying the book and certainly needed another round or two of editing. I had to order the book and have it shipped to me, which took a week and a half. The book was not worth the price or the wait. The author’s writing did not flow easily, but he jumped around in his thought process. What I liked about the book was the author’s honesty regarding his life and his mental illness. I would only recommend this book to adults who like memoirs or autobiographies. There was too much negativity for young adults. Unfortunately, I can only give this book 3 out of 5 stars because of all the errors I found.

I would assume the 120 times of waking up would be the whole night. The average person wakes up about 5 times a night. So 120 would be a lot! I had to do a sleep study and be put on a CPAP machine as well when I was a teenager because I also woke up more than 100 times a night. It was terrible, I never felt like I got any sleep at all.
It is such a shame that this book had so many errors. Thank you for such a good review to give others an idea of what to expect.

Comment: This review provides helpful insights into "Dream Walkers Don't Play Racquetball" but highlights various errors and a lack of editing. While the reviewers appreciate the author's honesty, the negativity may not appeal to young adults. The review, given a rating of 3 out of 5 stars, indicates that the book may not be a substantial addition to one's library.

Hi, Shirley Ann. I guess I should not ask if the author plays racquetball. Danial had enough to deal with in light of not getting any quality sleep, sleepwalking, and caring for parents who were hoarders. This book could be an interesting read for many people who are afflicted by one or more of the challenges this man had. The fact that it is in a novella format is also interesting. It is not long and drawn out. I hope the author takes your constructive criticism into account so that he can improve the book. If he does, more people will want to read this book. :techie-studyinggray:

I appreciate your honesty in expressing your opinion. I know the feeling of having a greater expectation for a book then facing opposite reality.
The general idea can produce a distinctive book if written well.
Thank you Shirley for your wonderful analysis of the book.
