Soldier’s Son is a historical fiction novel composed of 318 standard pages in PDF format by Ian Dodds. The author made use of a third person omniscient point of view in narrating the story. This story is all about the life events of David who encountered different challenges because of his father who has mood swings and manic depression. His father was an ex-soldier who had a traumatic experienced during the war.

The story started with an introduction about the childhood of David. David was very proud of his father because his father taught him everything he knows. Because of his desire to help his mother, he was doing sideline jobs for their neighbors by mowing grass in their backyards, for him to earn money. He completed his high school life and found a job immediately. He worked at Tony Bells and met Cherie, whom he liked and had a fling. During his relationship with Cherie, he regularly goes to a counselor because he was afraid that he inherited his father’s manic depression and mood swings. He was afraid that he might do what the way his father treated his mother when his illness strike.

David was promoted and was transferred to another workplace which was the reason why he and Cherie separated. David dislikes his companion in the office which encouraged him to resign. After David resigned from his work, he continued to college and met Frances, whom he fell in love with and wanted to marry.

This book is inspiring because of the life events and experiences of David. I admire him for being brave in dealing with his problems from his family and from his relationships. I pity the character of Cherie in the story because she was very desperate to win David back which her behavior became worst. I like the story because I somehow relate myself from the experiences of David during his early life.

The series of events were very well-presented, but some part of the story has disturbing contents because of the dialogues of the characters. At first, I was curious about the sudden involvement of numerous characters in the story, but while I go through it, I slowly understood their part. I was also caught by the sudden change of the setting. The author skipped the part where David resigned from his job and decided to continue to college.

I rate Soldier’s Son 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to individuals who experienced the same as David and for anyone who is fond of reading historical fiction novels.

This sounds like a great historical fiction on a serious issue that many people experience even in our world today. There's a lot of people who experience PTSD and this book can be an eye-opener for them.

Great Review! ?

PTSD definitely needs to be discussed more as well as issues that soldier's face when coming back from war. Sounds like quite a book. Thanks for the review.

I think this are issues globally neglected. As said earlier, there should be more of such discussions. When soldiers come from war, they have this trauma they would do anything to get rid of even if they will have to display anger on their family.
