Life Before by K.L. Romo is a soul-piercing tale of a woman who stumbled on her past life unknowingly. This novel is based on the concept of rebirth and how a soul experiences many lives.
The main character of the book Elaine is an aspiring writer. She is undergoing major changes in her life and decides to resume her passion for writing. During her writing sessions, she is unknowingly transported to her past life. However, the biggest shock for her was her profession in the former life. In that life she was a prostitute named Eliza. The emotional confusion and struggle that Elaine experienced was clearly depicted on the pages of Life Before and at times it was difficult to detach myself from the main character.
Though the book started with Elaine as the main character, Eliza was the person who came out dominantly in the book. She had the spirit of a warrior. The way she decided to end her way of earning as a prostitute and became a guiding star for other prostitutes was a very brave step. Her heart was so full of kindness and compassion that I could not help falling in love with her character.
However, this book is not a light read. The book brings a person face to face with the realities faced by the less privileged people of the society. How the circumstances forced many young and innocent girls to the life of prostitution made me cry. The crime and atrocities committed against them were beyond imagination. The worst part was the lack of concern for these people and that made these crimes more dangerous.
Though the story revolved around Elaine and Eliza, the novel told the story of many girls separately. Each one had a different life, different reasons to become a prostitute and had different degrading acts forced upon them. The way they all helped each other in times of need and despair was appreciable as well as heart-wrenching. The book is written in such a beautiful manner that I was unable to stop myself from feeling the same dejection, pain, guilt and remorse that the characters felt.
Life Before is a well-written book which has so many emotions in it that the reader gets caught in the pages. I could not find even a single typing or grammatical error in the book. The author deserves a big congratulation for this. It is a great read for time travel book lovers. However, I must warn the readers that this is not a light read, it shakes the whole being with thoughts and emotions and at several instances the novel is shrouded in gloom and darkness. There are several graphical sexual scenes in the book, so I will recommend it for adult readers only. I give Life Before a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because of its excellent writing style, a novel plot and a perfect editing.

Sometimes, I don't judge people who live their lives this way, it's sometimes the only available option to them, the problem is when they become comfortable living that way.
Whether you win battles at war fronts, or in your personal lives, a warrior is still a warrior, the type of battle regardless.
Well done for writing such a thorough review. I hope to catch more of your reviews. Cheers

Thank You for your appreciation. Please do give it a try. But i must warn you that your mind will not be free of the characters' thoughts and you will keep on wondering why no one is taking any action for them.hsimone wrote:Great review! I've been thinking about giving this one a try. It definitely doesn't sound like a light read, but it does sound like a thought-provoking one. I love when authors can capture real emotions in a book, and this one seems like a good one for that. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for your encouraging words. Yes Eliza is a very strong character. She had a nature of helping everyone regardless of their station in life. I look forward to your views on my other reviews.Ayosinmi wrote:Wow! It's a book I definitely would enjoy reading after all. I especially love the reformed life of Eliza. I like the fact that she not only stopped living like that, she also helped other girls to live honestly.
