If you have a fascination with mythology and the ancient world, this book is for you! Apollo’s Raven by Linnea Tanner is set in the year 24 AD. The Emperor of Rome wants to change the treaty that he has with King Armen. The king’s youngest daughter Catrin is eager to prove her loyalty to her father. Will Princess Catrin be able to save her father’s kingdom from a possible Roman invasion?

This story is full of twists and turns. The reader is immediately drawn into the story as Roman ships are seen in the harbor. This tale is told from the perspective of Princess Catrin as she tries to discern between friends and enemies. She learns she must use her talents to save her family and kingdom.

It is evident that the author has done extensive research into Celtic mythology and the traditions of the ancient world. Throughout the story, the writer gives a detailed description of the religious beliefs of the various characters. The reader is given a real sense of the role that superstition plays in the lives of ancient people.

I really enjoyed this book. I am unfamiliar with Celtic mythology and history. I liked getting a detailed picture of what life was like during this time period. Furthermore, I appreciated that there were some cultures in the ancient world that valued strong women.

One aspect of the book that I disliked was the detailed descriptions of hunting and animal sacrifices. Although I know that animal sacrifice was common during this time, the descriptions made me queasy.

Overall, I would recommend Apollo’s Raven to anyone who likes an adventure story. This tale shows that being in a royal family isn’t always easy! The political intrigue will keep on the edge of your seat! The author’s note at the end of the book is very informative. The author indicates the characters that are real, mythological, or her own creation. The book is well edited. I give it five out of five stars.
