The Painting, a book authored by Michael C. Reid, is based on a true-life story based on a man who experienced and suffered during the regime of Fidel Castro as the president of Cuba. It is a fabricated retelling of the life of Roberto Ramos in the late 1990s.

It details the oppression suffered by every average Cuban in Cuba during Castro’s regime, the revolt by certain figures in the story against this oppressive overlord, and the price they pay for their insolence against Castro. It highlights the struggle and battle of the common man against a structure made solely to oppress and keep them under the shackles of betrayal and suffering.

Something I find very relatable about this book is the concept of fighting and battling against a government system that is unjust, oppressive, and detrimental to her own citizens, her subjects. It is a characteristic that modern-day people lack and yearn for. It is an ability to stand against those who wish to keep you enslaved with fear, and this ability is what Roberto Ramos perfectly exhibited in the book. It shows the extent to which the power of the indomitable human spirit can push a man to fight for his rights against all odds, even in the face of overwhelming adversity, which is unjust rulership in this case.

Personally, I have no fault with the way the book was written. Everything was okay and done well. The story was wholesome and realistic, the writing style was addictive and kept your eyes glued to the pages, and the diction was okay as well—not too grammatically complex that we need a dictionary to aid us in understanding, but not too simple either that the emotions, lessons, and storytelling were not conveyed to the reader.

The book deserves a 5 out of 5-star rating due to its perfect blend of all the right things about storytelling based on actual events. The story was wholesome, realistic, and easy to understand. The book is recommended to every patriotic citizen of any nation or state, especially anyone who is unjustly oppressed. Those interested in political history should also ensure they read the book. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.
