5 out of 5 stars.

This is a historical fiction novel authored by Curtis Stephen Burdick and it depicts events in the Second World War by concocting such a daring task as the rescue of General Patton. General Patton was related to the present and when the historian John Harding gets a parcel from General Patton’s granddaughter: Julia Patton Walton she presents some documents that contain secrets of 1943. While exploring these secrets, Garland presents the story of an ordinary man engaging in acts of heroism, deceit, and self-sacrifice. The actual content of the tutorial as well as the characters presented by Burdick may be considered historical, however, the events depicted in the book are fiction, and Burdick has done an excellent job at making this historical fiction more on the realistic side with a good number of well-developed characters and the suspense factor. It is for the reasons outlined above that I feel that this book deserves the 5-star rating because it is evident that the author undertook extensive research to create this book.

The characterization can only be deemed admirable; all the characters add a distinctive flavor to the narrative. In this novel, John Harding’s character is profound to a certain extent, as the audience follows his transition from pure interest in the matter to the discovery of a secret buried deep in the World War II period. Julia Patton Walton, mainly the granddaughter of the legendary General Patton, makes the story more dramatic and insightful.

Secondary characters, like Peter Pizzio, Rosen, and Captain Moretta, are sketched in sufficient detail to make their courage, and brotherly feeling very vivid. The story of Pizzio and his leadership when fighting for the country as well as Giueseppes’s valor to protect the country paints the struggle faced in the Second World War.

Historical aspects are the explicit focus of the novel, and Burdick’s comprehensive historical research and his shades of history between historical facts and fiction make the historical elements of the novel informative and suspenseful at the same time. The book is full of plot twists, especially the Patton capture and rescue plot which is very suspenseful because of how they planned it.

As far as I am concerned, ‘Rescuing General Patton’ by Curtis Stephen Burdick is a marvelous story, but there are a few shortcomings that might be regarded as weaknesses. It is plausible that some readers may consider some of the historical distortions along with other conjectures as unrealistic, forgoing the probable limit. Besides, some casual readers may find it difficult to follow because there is too much military-related terminology and methodical planning of military operations from WWII. Still, all these points do not affect Burdick’s mastery of storytelling, the captivating plot, and the elaborated characters, which makes the reader feel benefited and justified having the 5-star rate the book.

This book seems to have been edited well with no mistakes and the writing style of the book is well done all in all the book is wonderful.

Overall, “Rescuing General Patton” is not simply a historical novel; it is also a word of appreciation for the unheard stories of the War and the possible stories that might have been written if such a force became a reality. Thus, Burdick developed a successful narrative and unique storytelling skills as well as an extraordinary focus on characters that placed him among the most remarkable authors of American Civil War stories. It belongs to the interlocking of history enthusiasts and various fiction lovers and I have no doubt it should be made into a large-scale film adaptation.
