Review of Truth and Evil
Truth and Evil drops you into the heart of WWII from the perspective of a German soldier who has been hardened by facing battle. We meet him in a mundane house sweep, where he makes a horrific choice and then is killed. Upon his death, he finds himself before God, and God sends him back to right before his death in an attempt to make a different choice and save lives. The soldier goes through many iterations of making different choices at different critical points in his life before his heart is truly changed. At that time, he learns what God was first truly explaining to him and how evil is always there and is a choice, not something that just happens.
This book was very thought-provoking and insightful for me as a believer in Christ. The soldier is at first apathetic, has lost his moral compass, and blindly trusts the leadership and those around him. Facing God and seeing his past through new eyes slowly changes his heart and beliefs, and the soldier starts to have new beliefs about himself and the war. He learns that the devil is always waiting and evil is always one choice away when your heart is in the wrong place. This story makes me think so much about how no one is immune to bad choices, and we all have many times in our lives where we can choose the evil and the horrific.
Overall, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was engaging and thought-provoking, and I enjoyed the WWII setting. It was also impeccably edited and reviewed. This is a great story if you’re a Christian or someone who enjoys historical fiction. In addition to my review, I want to warn you that there is a rape that takes place in the book. It is not graphically detailed, but it does happen and is brought up more than once.
