Despite the claims of democracy in various countries, real democracy has yet to see the light of day, quite frankly. This is what a reader will be able to note once they read the book by Michael C. Reid. The Painting set in Cuba lets us in on the life Roberto Ramos and his fellow countrymen are forced to live because of an oppressive regime that only seeks to enrich itself at the cost of innocent men, women, and children. Roberto spends time in prison for some minor cases to none at all, and he decides to leave his country if he wants his dreams to see the light of day.

The cases of immigration have spiraled over the years, with the current times seeing a surge in people risking their lives to make it out of their impoverished, selfish countries to reach Europe and even the United States. The book puts this in perspective, showing how people are pushed to the cliff and left with no option but to take the fall.

It's impossible not to recognize the importance of a dream in one's life. Like many other influential people, Roberto had a dream, and of course, he wavered; of course, he was persuaded otherwise; of course, he lost people on the way; and of course, he was mistreated in pursuing the same. But does he have what it takes to take in all that until the last blow? This is a very important aspect to consider in life, hence making the book more worthwhile.

I found nothing to dislike in the book and took it to heart, as it talks of situations that various people have to face as a matter of predisposition at birth, something they have no control over. The book has been exceptionally edited, with no errors whatsoever. The font and spacing were quite exceptional as well.

The book earns 5 out of 5 stars as it exposes the reader to what other countries look like and how they are run, a great case study, The rating is also derived from its exceptional editing. It would be good for university students, as most of them can rise to the challenge no matter the cost.
